Brothers Fernán Nebiros and Álvaro Amduscias founded the extreme metal band Mortem in Lima, Peru, during the summer of 1986. They quickly forged a dark, aggressive sound that blended early death metal with evil thrash metal like Slayer.
The group established their underground presence through a series of foundational demo releases: Evil Dead (1989), Superstition (1991), Vomit of the Earth (1992) and Unearth the Buried Evil (1993).
In 1995, Mortem recorded their full-length debut, Demon Tales. Local label Huasipungo Records released the album soon after. German label Merciless Records then reissued the record internationally. Consequently, Mortem became the first Peruvian metal band to sign with a European record label.
The band maintained steady momentum over the following decade. They released The Devil Speaks in Tongues through Merciless Records in 1998. Next, they delivered Decomposed by Possession in 2000. Mortem subsequently signed with Iron Pegasus Records for their 2005 full-length release, De Natura Daemonum.
Meanwhile, Mortem made history on the road. They became the first Peruvian metal act to complete tours across both Europe and the United States between 2003 and 2004.
Following a prolonged studio silence, Mortem returned in 2016 to release their fifth full-length album, Deinós Nekrómantis. Despite frequent lineup changes and geographic distance between members over the decades, founders Fernán Nebiros and Alvaro Amduscias continue to drive Mortem forward as a premier pioneer of South American extreme metal.
