Sadistic Intent is an American death metal band from Los Angeles, California. The band formed in 1987 and grew from the local extreme-metal underground.

Founding brothers Rick and Bay Cortez shaped the band’s identity from the beginning. They drew inspiration from extreme metal pioneers such as Slayer, Venom, Sodom, Celtic Frost, Death, and Possessed.

Early on, Sadistic Intent developed a reputation for aggressive songwriting and a fiercely independent approach. In 1989, they released the Conflict Within demo and began reaching listeners beyond California.

Soon afterward, the band signed with Wild Rags Records. The label released Impending Doom in 1990, while Sadistic Intent expanded its audience through shows in the United States and Mexico.

However, disagreements with the label soon pushed the band toward independence. In 1991, they issued the limited A Calm Before the Storm 7-inch themselves. Lineup difficulties then kept them away from live performances until 1993.

The band returned in 1994 with Resurrection. On that release, bassist Bay Cortez also took over vocal duties, establishing a lineup and sound that would define their next era.

Next, Sadistic Intent released Ancient Black Earth in 1997 through their own Dark Realm Records. They also recorded material for tribute releases honoring influential bands such as Celtic Frost, Slayer, and Possessed.

In 1998, the band released a split 7-inch with German black metal group Ungod. The following year brought another connection with Possessed, featuring Jeff Becerra on vocals for the band’s tribute recording.

That relationship eventually led to a major chapter in Sadistic Intent’s history. In 2007, Jeff Becerra joined the Cortez brothers for performances of Possessed material and Sadistic Intent eventually became the backing band for Possessed until 2010.

Sadistic Intent then continued its long-running underground career with another lineup change. Arthur Mendiola joined on drums in 2011.

In 2014, Sadistic Intent released Reawakening Horrid Thoughts, a 12-inch EP through Iron Pegasus Records. Two years later, they issued Invocations of the Death-Ridden, a split release with Pentacle.

Throughout their career, Sadistic Intent have maintained a strong connection to Los Angeles’ underground metal community. The Cortez brothers also operate Dark Realm Records in Downey, California, linking the band directly to their independent musical network.

Meanwhile, the band has toured internationally across Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and Asia. Their live history includes appearances in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Finland, Germany, Italy, Australia, Singapore, and France.

Unlike many long-running metal acts, Sadistic Intent have built their catalog around demos, EPs, splits, and compilations rather than a conventional sequence of full-length albums. That approach has remained central to their underground identity.

Today, Sadistic Intent remain rooted in the uncompromising traditions of old-school death metal. Their decades-long career reflects persistence, independence, and a commitment to extreme metal outside mainstream trends.
